Breath Tool: Sunshine Breath
Sunshine breath, sometimes called sun breath, is a simple movement and breathing exercise, pairing an easy overhead stretch with a slow, steady breath. It's warming and uplifting: energizing for the body, clarifying for the mind.
It's perfect for moments when you need a boost of positivity or clarity, especially first thing in the morning. It's also a wonderful practice to share with kids.
How to practice Sunshine Breath:
Find a Comfortable Position: Standing or seated, indoors or out. (My favorite way is outside, first thing in the morning, with the sun on my face.)
Set Your Hands: Rest them at your sides, or bring your palms together at your heart center, whichever feels most natural.
Inhale: Breathe in through the nose for a count of four as you sweep your arms overhead, palms rising toward the sky. Imagine the sun rising with you.
Pause: Hold gently at the top of the inhale. Look up. Stretch through your fingertips.
Exhale: Breathe out through the nose for a count of four, turning your palms down as you lower your arms back to your sides. Imagine breathing out any storm clouds or tension.
Repeat: Continue for three to six rounds.
To Close: On your final inhale, bring your palms to rest at your heart center.
If reaching fully overhead is uncomfortable for your shoulders, keep the arms at shoulder height instead. The breath is doing the work either way.
Benefits:
Loosens tight muscles through the shoulders and chest
Opens the chest and shoulders
Lengthens the thoracic spine (mid back)
Brings a sense of calm and clarity
Sunshine breath works because it puts movement and breath to work together. As the arms lift overhead on the inhale, the rib cage expands and the chest opens, giving the diaphragm more room to draw in a fuller breath. An open chest paired with a longer inhale is part of what shifts the body toward feeling more alert and awake, while the slow, even count keeps the nervous system from tipping into overdrive.
